ELEVEN
I regretted it immediately. I mean, what the hell kind of a plan was this? Izzy was still going to walk out of the shower any minute, and then she’d be eviscerated, or eaten alive, or worse. Unless, of course, I’d gotten him mad enough to follow me out here. And then what?
I clung to the chimney stack that I’d scrambled to in a panic. The brickwork was cold and the edges crumbled beneath my grip. I tried not to look down or throw up as, shaking, I pulled myself around to the other side.
It was dusk already, the sky deep blue and darkening fast. Moonlight reflected off the grey slate roof tiles. I peered around the chimney stack, heart pounding. What was happening back in the dorm room? How long had it been since I jumped out? Five seconds? Ten?
Had I only saved myself, and sacrificed Izzy?
My answer came with a roar as the creature leapt up through the nearest skylight, howling, a murderous look on his face. I whipped my head back and flattened myself against the bricks, praying he hadn’t seen me.
The roof rattled as he landed just feet away from me. I could hear the sound of his cloven hooves and sharp fingernails, scraping on the tiles as he tried to find purchase.
I could see movement through the brightly-lit windows on the other side of the building as people calmly went about their business, oblivious to what was happening. I squinted: was that Champ in one of the offices? They couldn’t see me out here in the dark, but if I screamed and waved, maybe I could get their attention? But that would give away my position, and there would be no chance of rescue before that thing got to me.
I closed my eyes and attempted to control my breathing, not daring to move a muscle. It wasn’t easy, remaining motionless on a sloping roof; arms aching, legs trembling, gravity tugging at me. The old tiles were covered in patches of moss, slippery under my smooth-soled shoes.
I could hear him panting and growling, a low and threatening noise. He couldn’t see me though; I was sure of it. He didn’t know which direction I’d gone. As far as he knew, I could have hurled myself out the window and right over the edge.
Then everything went quiet. No growling, no panting, no sound of hooves on tiles. Had he gone?
I heard him sniff. Great deep, lung-filling inhalations. I’d never realised how threatening a sniff could sound, but this one was petrifying. And I was covered in sweat, stinking of fear.
There was a terrifying scrambling noise, and suddenly he had me. A hand seized my neck, claws scratching my throat. He dragged me from my hiding place, tendons flexing in his leathery arm as he lifted me bodily into the air.
He laughed, a short bark of triumph, baring his wolf-like teeth. I felt the stench of his hot breath in my face. I tried to stand on tiptoes
